You can rank first and still lose the click to the answer above you.
An AI Overview sits above the results and answers the question. If it cites you, the ranking still works. If it appears and does not cite you, your position is intact and your traffic is not, and a position number alone will never show you that.

The gap between ranking and traffic
The single most confusing pattern in search right now is a stable ranking with falling clicks. Nothing in a traditional rank tracker explains it, so people assume the tracker is wrong, or that seasonality is to blame, and go looking in the wrong place.
The usual explanation is an AI Overview. It occupies the top of the page, answers the question well enough that a large share of people stop reading, and pushes the actual results below the fold. Your position is unchanged. The value of that position is not.
Being cited is the new version of ranking
When an Overview appears, the useful question stops being where you rank and becomes whether you are one of the sources it drew on. A cited source still gets a click, and it gets it with a form of endorsement attached.
So we record both facts against every keyword every day: did an Overview appear, and were you in it. Over a few weeks that turns into a genuinely actionable picture, because you can see which of your keywords are now answered above the results and which of those still send you traffic.
Don't know what these are? Don't worry, we've got you!
What it changes about what you write
Pages that get cited tend to answer a specific question directly and early, in a form that can be lifted out cleanly. Pages that bury the answer under six paragraphs of preamble tend not to, even when they rank well, because there is nothing convenient to quote.
This is not a trick and it is not new advice dressed up. It is the same instruction good editors have always given, with a new and very direct incentive attached.
Watch the whole portfolio, not one keyword
The share of your tracked keywords with an Overview above them is a number worth watching on its own. When it climbs, the ground is shifting under a set of pages, and it usually climbs for a topic at a time rather than evenly.
That is the early warning. It tells you which part of your site needs rewriting for citation before the traffic drop shows up in your analytics, rather than after.
Common questions
What is a Google AI Overview?
An AI-generated answer that appears above the normal results for many searches, assembled from sources it cites. It answers the question on the results page, which means a share of searchers never click through to any website.
How do I get cited in an AI Overview?
Rank well for the query first, since Overviews are largely assembled from pages that already rank, then make sure the specific question is answered directly and early on the page rather than buried. Being crawlable by the relevant bots is a precondition.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?
They reduce clicks for the queries where they appear, particularly informational ones. Being cited recovers part of that. The reason to track presence and citation per keyword is that the effect is very uneven across a keyword set.
Every plan gets all of it
We do not split this across tiers. Rank tracking, AI Overview presence, AI visibility across all three assistants, the daily AI readiness scan, security and domain health, Search Console, backlinks and audits are on every plan from £29 a month. Plans differ only in how much you track.
The other measurements
AI rank tracking
Google results you can see.
ChatGPT visibility
ChatGPT does not return a ranked list, so there is no position to track.
Perplexity
Perplexity is smaller than ChatGPT and considerably more transparent.
Gemini
Of the assistants worth watching, Gemini is the one wired most directly into the search ecosystem you already care about.
