There is no position one in ChatGPT. There is being in the answer, or not.
ChatGPT does not return a ranked list, so there is no position to track. What there is: whether you get named, whether you get cited as a source, and who gets named instead of you. Those are measurable, and they are what now decides whether a customer ever hears of you.

Why your ranking does not predict this
The obvious assumption is that an assistant reads the top of Google and summarises it, so a good ranking should carry over. It does not work that way in practice. The assistant assembles an answer from sources it has decided to trust for that subject, and that set overlaps with the top ten results without being the top ten results.
Businesses ranking first for a term routinely find themselves absent from the assistant answer to the same question, while a directory, a forum thread or a competitor two pages down gets named. Until you measure it you will not know which of those you are.
Mention and citation are different, and the difference matters
Being mentioned means the assistant said your name. That has real value: it is a recommendation, and the person may well search for you afterwards.
Being cited means your page is linked as a source. That sends a click, and it is the closer analogue to a ranking. We report both separately, because a business with a high mention rate and a low citation rate has a specific problem, which is usually that the assistant knows of you from other people writing about you rather than from your own pages.
Don't know what these are? Don't worry, we've got you!
The answers change by country, and the default may not be yours
Ask an assistant what a service costs and, without a location signal, the answer frequently reflects a different country entirely: different prices, different currency, different companies. Your customers get an answer about a market you are not in, and no local business appears at all.
You set the country per question, so the answers you measure are the answers your customers actually get. Country is honoured across the platforms we track; city is available where it is meaningful, for questions that are genuinely local.
What you do about a bad result
When you are missing, the cause is usually one of three things, and they need different responses. Sometimes a crawler is blocked, which is a technical fix and the fastest win there is. Sometimes your pages do not answer the question in a liftable form, which is a content structure problem. Sometimes the assistant is simply drawing on sources that never mention you, which is a coverage problem and takes longer.
The sources list tells you which. It is the closest thing to a direct instruction any SEO tool gives you: these are the pages the answer was built from, and being present on them is how you get into the answer.
Common questions
How do you track rankings in ChatGPT?
By asking it real questions on a schedule and recording the answers. There is no ranked list to read, so the measurements are whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited as a source, and who appeared instead. We check weekly.
Why am I not showing up in ChatGPT?
The three usual causes are a blocked crawler, content that does not answer the question in a form that can be lifted into an answer, or the assistant drawing on sources that never mention you. The first is technical and quick to fix; our AI readiness scan checks it daily.
Do you track Gemini and Perplexity too?
Yes, the same questions run across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity so the results are comparable, and they frequently disagree with each other in useful ways.
Every plan gets all of it
We do not split this across tiers. Rank tracking, AI Overview presence, AI visibility across all three assistants, the daily AI readiness scan, security and domain health, Search Console, backlinks and audits are on every plan from £29 a month. Plans differ only in how much you track.
The other measurements
AI rank tracking
Google results you can see.
AI Overviews
An AI Overview sits above the results and answers the question.
Perplexity
Perplexity is smaller than ChatGPT and considerably more transparent.
Gemini
Of the assistants worth watching, Gemini is the one wired most directly into the search ecosystem you already care about.
